Abuja, Nigeria (CU)_ An ultra-modern outpatient facility was opened by Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the House of Representatives, at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) in Idi-Araba. According to the media, the facility comprises five connected blocks: a testing block, an emergency block, a consultation block, and an administration block.

According to Gbajabiamila, LUTH’s employees were talented and capable of competing with their peers around the globe. He explained that the hospital was unable to admit everyone due to inadequate facilities, making the outpatient facility project critical for the entire city of Lagos. He stated that with the opening of the new facility, the hospital will be able to handle a greater number of patients. According to Gbajabiamila’s estimation, the project would be completed within 14 to 18 months if the workers could perform both day and night shifts.

According to Prof. Chris Bode, the Chief Medical Director, the opening of the outpatient facility was another demonstration of the speaker’s commitment to the well-being of Nigerians. According to Bode, the speaker had always been an ardent supporter of the institution. Bode explained the facilities in the new building. He said, “Each comprising four floors to house 256 consultation rooms, 16 waiting areas, 16 nursing stations, eight meeting rooms, eight patients’ lifts and many other facilities including a car park, cafeterias, shops, amongst others’’.

Bode explained the necessity of the new building. He said, “Our Accident and Emergency buildings across the road were commissioned over 45 years ago. With only the ground floor used for A & E and Operation Theater while the remaining three floors serve as outpatient clinics. While our services had flourished and grown in the past years, we could not expand our Emergency services to accommodate the burgeoning number of clients. Rooms to run OPD Clinics also became fewer with long patients’ waiting time and fewer clinic opportunities”.

According to the medical director, the management opted to expand LUTH’s services to the new facility so that all outpatient services may be transferred to a separate building across the street into a modern facility, benefitting both patient and staff. He added that the speaker gladly agreed to push the idea with the help of a National Assembly intervention fund. He stated that the management was ready to set a new standard with the generous allocation of five new structures.
