Global (Commonwealth Union) – Every year on June 8th, people across the globe join hands to celebrate World Oceans Day, a global event dedicated to honoring and protecting the vast bodies of water that cover our planet. The oceans play a vital role in sustaining life on Earth, providing us with food, oxygen, and regulating the climate. This special day serves as a reminder of the importance of our oceans and the need to take action to preserve their health and biodiversity.

The theme for World Oceans Day 2023 is “Life and Livelihoods,” highlighting the interconnectivity between the well-being of marine ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them. It recognizes the significance of oceans not only as a source of sustenance and livelihood for millions of people but also as a hub of biodiversity and a key player in mitigating climate change.

The oceans cover over 70% of the Earth’s surface, and provide 50% of the world’s oxygen supply. Oceans are home to an incredible diversity of life. From the tiniest plankton to the majestic whales, from vibrant coral reefs to vast kelp forests, the oceans support a web of interconnected ecosystems that contribute to the overall health of our planet. They also act as a carbon sink, absorbing a significant portion of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere, helping to regulate the Earth’s climate.

However, our oceans face numerous challenges that threaten their delicate balance. Pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, climate change, and micro-plastic waste pose serious risks to marine life and ecosystems. The indiscriminate dumping of pollutants, including plastics, chemicals, and oil spills, harms marine species and can lead to devastating consequences for both the atmosphere and human health.

On World Oceans Day, individuals, organizations, and governments come together to raise awareness about these challenges and promote actions to protect and conserve our oceans. It’s a day to celebrate the beauty and richness of our marine environments, while also acknowledging the urgent need to address the issues that threaten their existence.
