Will Passkeys be the revolution in account security?

Africa ( Commonwealth Union) _ Passkeys, a new form of internet security, is gaining traction with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, signaling a potential end to traditional passwords. Passkeys offer numerous benefits and are set to revolutionize account security.

At their core, passkeys provide a more secure approach to internet authentication. Recognized by the World Wide Web Consortium and FIDO Alliance, major players in the industry are actively working on integrating passkey support into their platforms.

So, how do passkeys work? Essentially, a passkey allows users to access their accounts by using an external device to authorize the login process. Instead of entering passwords, users can approve logins with a face scan, fingerprint, or pin. Think of it as a password-less Two Factor Authentication.

Passkeys offer enhanced security features. When logging in, users receive prompts on their devices, each presenting a unique challenge. The server encrypts these challenges differently each time, significantly reducing the risk of cyberattacks.

Additionally, passkeys minimize the likelihood of human errors. Unlike passwords that are often reused across various accounts, each passkey is unique to the individual, application, and platform, adding an extra layer of security.

With passkeys, the days of tracking multiple passwords are over. While password managers promised a more secure solution, they have been prone to vulnerabilities. For instance, LastPass, one of the largest password managers, suffered a major security breach in 2022. In contrast, passkeys offer a more reliable and secure approach to login authentication, mitigating concerns about phishing attacks.

As per the Microsoft Digital Defense Report, password attacks have skyrocketed, with a 74% increase compared to the previous year, averaging 921 attacks per second. By adopting passkeys, users can take a significant step towards bolstering their account security and combating phishing attempts.

In conclusion, passkeys represent a future-oriented solution to internet security. With the support of industry giants and their inherent advantages over passwords, passkeys offer a more secure, convenient, and effective method of authenticating user logins. The shift towards passwordless authentication is well underway.
