Gold mine managers find themselves in a predicament

 would be filled with groundwater and precipitation, and when the water reached a certain level it may seep into Moose River, a matter which has prompted concerns among environmental campaigners. 

Accordingly, the company says it plans to adjust the pH in the water in order to ensure that the expected standard of water quality is met. If testing shows that the quality of the water falls short of the established standards, it would be pumped into a treatment facility before being released. 

On the other hand, Atlantic Gold wants to expand its designated storage area for waste rock, that is low-grade rock which is removed and not processed for gold, by another 7 hectares from the current area of 35 hectares. While this would require the relocation of an access road, experts claim that the project would also affect wetlands in the area. Nevertheless, the company says the proposed plan is not expected to have significant environmental effects, although it may affect the water quality and fish habitat.

The environment minister is expected to make a decision regarding these proposals by 5 September and in the meantime, Atlantic Gold has decided to also seek public feedback on the plans until 16 August.
