The 82nd Golden Globe Awards, held Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, celebrated a diverse slate of films and television while rewarding some of the boldest cinematic achievements of the year.

“The Brutalist” Wins Best Film, Drama
Brady Corbet‘s ambitious The Brutalist took home the award for Best Film in the Drama category, as well as Best Director for Corbet and Best Actor for Adrien Brody. The 215-minute epic tells the story of a mid-century architect grappling with his identity and legacy.

Corbet, addressing the skepticism his film initially faced, stated, “I was told this film was un-distributable. No one was asking for a three-and-a-half-hour movie about a mid-century designer in 70mm. But it works.”

Adrien Brody, recognized for his compelling performance, praised the film’s unique vision and thanked Corbet for taking such risks in storytelling.

Surprising Wins in Acting Categories
The night saw several unexpected victories, with Julianne Moore winning Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical for her role in The Substance, a satirical tale of a Hollywood actress resorting to experimental treatments to regain her youth. The award marked Moore’s first Golden Globe win, despite a career spanning over four decades.

Fernanda Torres, a Brazilian actress, claimed Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in I’m Still Here. The film, based on true events, depicts a family’s struggles during the 1970s military dictatorship in Brazil. Torres’s emotional portrayal earned her widespread commendation.

Sebastian Stan won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical or Comedy for A Different Man, a transformative role in which he plays a man with a disfigured face who undergoes reconstructive surgery. Stan, also nominated for portraying Donald Trump in The Apprentice, highlighted the challenges of making films that push boundaries.

Nikki Glaser Brings Humor to the Globes
Comedian Nikki Glaser hosted the event with a mix of humor and poignancy, poking fun at Hollywood’s political leanings while steering clear of overt controversy.

Her sharp commentary provided a lighter touch to the evening, which has been part of the Globes’ ongoing efforts to rebuild trust after years of scandal.

Awards for Achievements in Film and Television
In addition to the big wins for The Brutalist, other notable awards included:

Wicked, directed by Jon M. Chu, earning the award for Cinematic and Box-Office Achievement. Praise for its optimism and creativity greeted the film, which has grossed nearly $700 million globally.

Kieran Culkin winning Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain, marking his second consecutive win after his Emmy success with Succession.

Conclave, a gripping papal thriller, winning Best Screenplay for Peter Straughan.

In the animated film category, Flow, a visually stunning Latvian parable about a cat surviving a flooded world, beat out major studio contenders like Inside Out 2.

Television Honors Go to Familiar Favorites
Television categories honored several repeat winners. Shogun, an epic adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, took home four awards, including Best Drama Series and acting awards for Hiroyuki Sanada, Anna Sawai, and Tadanobu Asano.

Other TV highlights included:

Hacks winning Best Comedy Series, with Jean Smart earning Best Actress.

Jeremy Allen White wins Best Actor for The Bear.

Colin Farrell receives the Best Actor in a Limited Series award for The Penguin.

The Golden Globes’ Comeback Journey
This year’s Golden Globes marked a continuation of the awards’ efforts to recover from past controversies involving diversity and ethics. Now owned by Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries and Dick Clark Productions, the Globes have undergone significant changes.

Despite its tumultuous history, the Globes proved it remains a major player in Hollywood’s awards season.
