Grenfell charity labelled racist

-

London, UK (CWBN)_ An internal review process that was conducted by the Westway Trust, a charity organisation that has been a part of the “collective response” supporting the victims of the Grenfell fire of 2017, reported that the organisation has a “legacy of institutional racism”.

The report recommended a formal and public apology in this regard. The charity later claimed that it made its apologies to the “entire community”.

The review process was initiated in 2018 following “serious” allegations of racism that has been projected by the organisation over the years, and was carried out by the Tutu Foundation, which provides mediation services.

“The legacy of institutional racism lives within the organisation in terms of the perceptions and relations with the African Caribbean community, which has led to a continuing mistrust,” the report read. “The trust has failed to understand, identify and address racial disparity in terms of key functions including in relation to service delivery and employment.”

In 1971, the North Kensington Trust, now the Westway Trust, was founded to support the North Kensington community which faced the backlash of the A40 motorway (5.6km), which was constructed at the time to relieve traffic congestion in the city.

The organisation manages about 23 acres of land under the motorway.
