Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ During a courtroom outburst on Thursday, a man facing terrorism charges for a fire that severely damaged South Africa’s Parliament building last year declared that he intentionally burned it. Zandile Mafe shouted and pointed his finger, expressing his intention to “burn it more” if Parliament was not relocated from Cape Town to either Bloemfontein or Pretoria.

The massive blaze, which occurred in January of last year, caused extensive damage to the historic Parliament complex, including the main chamber where lawmakers gather. The restoration process has not been completed, with estimates suggesting it will cost approximately $120 million and take at least three years.

Mafe was apprehended within the Parliament precinct shortly after the fire started and has since been charged with breaking and entering, arson, and terrorism. However, his case has been delayed due to a judge ordering a psychiatric evaluation to determine his fitness to stand trial.

During Thursday’s court appearance, the judge allowed Mafe to finish his outburst, expressing concern about exacerbating his mental condition. A preliminary expert report indicated that Mafe did not comprehend the wrongful nature of his actions. The final decision on whether a criminal trial will proceed has been postponed until next month.

Mafe also challenged the court to sentence him to 25 years to life, which is the potential outcome if the trial proceeds. He shouted, “I’m not afraid of a life sentence.”

The fire at South Africa’s parliamentary seat prompted criticism of the security procedures in place, as the buildings were largely empty while members were on a break. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident.

Mafe has expressed anger towards various issues in South Africa, accusing the opposition political party running the Cape Town municipality of racism against Black people and asserting that the government has failed to assist the poor.
