concerns over her discomfort in travelling. Nevertheless, the 95-year-old monarch issued a message marking the special occasion, in which she praised the association which was described as an “influential force for good”.

“In this year of my Platinum Jubilee, it has given me pleasure to renew the promise I made in 1947, that my life will always be devoted in service,” the Head of the Commonwealth said in her message. “Today, it is rewarding to observe a modern, vibrant and connected Commonwealth that combines a wealth of history and tradition with the great social, cultural and technological advances of our time. That the Commonwealth stands ever taller is a credit to all who have been involved.”

The Queen went on to commend the Commonwealth which has become a place to come together to pursue common goals and the common good. “And on this special day for our family – in a year that will include the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and the Commonwealth Games – I hope we can deepen our resolve to support and serve one another, and endeavour to ensure the Commonwealth remains an influential force for good in our world for many generations to come,” she added.

One of the critical subject of discussion during the service at Westminster Abbey was the ongoing crisis in Ukraine. “At this very moment, Ukraine risks being pulverised,” Lord Sentamu, former Archbishop of York, warned those gathered, adding that this is not the first time “might has demanded to be right”. He went on to say that his prayer to the war-torn nation was “heavenly justice”.

The Royal Family themselves have been outspoken about the conflict in Ukraine, with Prince Charles, the heir apparent to the British throne describing  Russia’s invasion as “an attack on democracy”. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have also expressed their support to the Eastern European nation during their recent visit to the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in London.
