Historic: Biden picks Indian-American judge to the US court!

USA (Commonwealth Union)_ President Joe Biden has put forth the nomination of Sanket Jayshukh Bulsara, a judge of Indian descent renowned for his expertise in securities, contract, bankruptcy, and regulatory matters, for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. A child of immigrants from India and Kenya, the 46-year-old Bulsara has served as a US Magistrate Judge for the Eastern District of New York since 2017, marking a significant milestone as the first South Asian American federal judge in the Second Circuit.

The announcement of Mr. Bulsara’s nomination, made by the White House on Thursday, underscores President Biden’s commitment to appointing highly qualified individuals who embody the principles of justice and uphold the rule of law. Described as exceptionally qualified and dedicated to constitutional principles, the latest round of judicial nominees, including Mr. Bulsara, reflects the administration’s dedication to ensuring diversity within the nation’s courts, both in terms of personal and professional backgrounds. The White House said, “These choices also continue to fulfill the President’s promise to ensure that the nation’s courts reflect the diversity that is one of our greatest assets as a country in terms of personal and professional backgrounds”.

Mr. Bulsara’s impressive legal career spans various prestigious roles, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to public service. Notably, from January 2017 to May 2017, he served as the Acting General Counsel of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), where he previously held the position of Deputy General Counsel for Appellate Litigation, Adjudication, and Enforcement since 2015. Prior to his tenure at the SEC, Mr. Bulsara held significant positions at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP, serving as an associate, counsel, and partner. His dedication to public service extends beyond his legal practice, as evidenced by his role as a Special Assistant District Attorney at the Kings County (Brooklyn) District Attorney’s Office and his involvement in pro bono cases, including representing incarcerated individuals, victims of domestic violence, and individuals on death row.

Mr. Bulsara’s diverse legal background, combined with his commitment to justice and fairness, positions him as an exemplary nominee for the federal judiciary. A product of esteemed educational institutions, Mr. Bulsara earned his Juris Doctor (JD) from Harvard Law School, graduating cum laude, and his Bachelor of Arts (AB) from Harvard College, magna cum laude. Born in the Bronx and raised in New Rochelle and Edgemont, New York, Mr. Bulsara’s upbringing reflects the quintessential American experience of immigrants striving for success. His father’s work as an engineer for the City of New York and his mother’s dedication as a nurse exemplify the values of hard work and service instilled in him from an early age.

Senate Majority Leader Senator Chuck Schumer, in endorsing Mr. Bulsara’s nomination, hailed him as a “first-rate legal mind” and a “talented public servant” who has demonstrated his commitment to safeguarding investors and financial markets during his tenure at the SEC. Senator Schumer also highlighted Mr. Bulsara’s commitment to pro bono work and his historic achievement as the first South Asian American federal judge in the Second Circuit, emphasizing his status as a symbol of the American Dream and a trailblazer for future generations. He stated, “Mr Bulsara is the epitome of the American Dream and a history maker: the child of hard-working immigrants from both India and Kenya, and the first South Asian American federal judge to serve on any court in the Second Circuit when he was appointed as a Magistrate Judge”.
