Hotels (Commonwealth Union) _ The Hotelstars Union (HSU), the esteemed European association responsible for harmonized hotel classification, has announced the approval of new criteria for awarding hotel stars from 2025 to 2030. This significant update underscores the commitment of the 21 member countries to modernize industry standards in response to evolving guest preferences and market dynamics. The rigorous review process, conducted every five to six years, ensures that the classification criteria remain relevant and reflective of the changing landscape of the hospitality industry.

The latest iteration of the HSU criteria catalogue is the result of twelve months of collaborative effort and meticulous deliberation. Through a comprehensive bottom-up approach, all member associations worked tirelessly to reach a consensus and harmonize their positions. This inclusive process ensures that the updated criteria are not only comprehensive but also widely recognized and valued by both guests and hoteliers.

The newly approved classification catalogue is a significant step towards a more sustainable, efficient, and guest-centric hospitality industry. Streamlining the criteria from 247 to 239, the update removes obsolete requirements and consolidates others to simplify the classification system. This reflects HSU’s dedication to evolving industry standards that align with the evolving needs of guests and the market.

Several notable changes have been introduced, including recommendations for enhanced mattress cleaning to meet heightened hygiene standards and promote sustainability by extending the lifespan of mattresses. Additionally, amenities such as sewing and shoe polishing supplies will no longer be provided in rooms, and adjustments to bed linen and towels will only be made upon guest request.

Recognizing the importance of digitalization, the updated criteria incorporate provisions for fully automated check-in and check-out services, particularly in lower-star categories. Self-service kiosks have also gained prominence and are now included in the criteria for four-star hotels, offering alternatives to traditional minibars and room service.

The revised classification criteria also take into account upcoming EU legislation and the evolving needs of the hospitality industry, providing EU hotels with a framework to enhance their offerings over the next five years. Member countries have until January 1, 2025, to implement the new catalogue at the national level, ensuring a seamless transition and adherence to the latest standards.

In essence, the approval of the updated HSU criteria marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of hotel classification, signalling a collective commitment to sustainability, efficiency, and guest satisfaction in the European hospitality sector.
