HCI Energy is a provider of intelligent power solutions for critical communications infrastructure. It announced on Tuesday, 27 January 2026, that it was to launch its Value-added Reseller (VAR) programme. It’s also announced the signing of its 1st VAR agreement with SMD Technical Solutions (SMD).
The new VAR program is designed to expand HCI Energy’s reach by partnering with experienced integrators. Additionally, the program aims to collaborate with service providers who comprehend the challenges of deploying and maintaining power systems in remote, high-risk, and mission-critical environments.
The agreement with SMD marks the first step in that expansion and underscores HCI Energy’s momentum. This is because industry leaders prioritise operational efficiency. Additionally, HCI Energy provides system visibility and proactive asset management for telecom, broadband, public safety, and remote infrastructure networks.

Shawne MacDonald, the founder and CEO of SMD Technical Solution, leads the company. The partnership benefits from its more than three decades of practical experience in telecom and broadband. SMD brings deep expertise in designing, building and operating networks in extreme and logistically challenging conditions across Canada and the Caribbean.
MacDonald’s background includes hurricane recovery in the Bahamas. Also, remote mountain head-end and microwave sites in Whistler, British Columbia. Additionally, he has been involved in the development of broadband infrastructure in both the Yukon and the Northwest Territories. MacDonald has also held leadership roles at Whistler Cable, Shaw Communications and the 2010 Winter Olympics.
MacDonald went on to share that when he first learnt about HCI Energy’s products, he was super excited. He added that he experienced firsthand how critical this kind of zero-glitch, intelligent power is. After some time supporting broadband, wireless and remote sites, he said that he had dealt with countless outages that had led to costly emergency truck rolls and helicopter flights that could have been avoided. HCI Energy provides telecom companies with clean, practical power solutions that make sense. This is with strong applications across Canada and the Caribbean.
