India (Commonwealth Union)_ Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi officially opened the state’s premier handloom expo, Ekta, at Janata Maidan to commemorate National Handloom Day. The event brought together artisans, authorities, and members of the public to celebrate Odisha’s rich weaving traditions and promote the handloom sector. During the ceremony, the Chief Minister announced that renowned Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit will serve as the official Brand Ambassador for Odisha Handloom for the next year. “Her association will take the work of our weavers beyond borders and bring global attention to Odisha’s craftsmanship,” Majhi said.

Addressing the audience, the Chief Minister talked passionately about how handloom is inextricably linked to Odisha’s identity, not only as an industry but also as a cultural legacy. “Our handloom reflects centuries of tradition, spirituality, and skill,” he said, drawing parallels between ancient maritime trade and today’s global fashion world. Around 1.3 lakh weavers and associated workers contribute to Odisha’s handloom sector, which covers 30 districts. These artisans belong to cooperatives, self-help groups, and producer collectives. They work to preserve traditional weaving techniques while also meeting modern needs.

During the Textile Conclave, Odisha signed 33 MoUs, attracting investments of ₹7,808 crore as well as creating nearly 53,000 jobs. As a result, the state is planning handloom parks in areas like Bargarh and Cuttack, which will include dye plants, design studios, and quality testing labs. The state also unveiled “Resha,” its new handloom mascot, and presented a short film honoring Odisha’s weaving heritage. Several veteran weavers were also honored for their contributions during the event.

Speaking at the launch, Madhuri Dixit expressed her admiration for the artisans. “Handloom isn’t just cloth—it’s a story, a way of life, and the soul of Odisha,” she said. Textiles Minister Pradeep Bal Samant highlighted new government initiatives under CM Majhi’s leadership, including schemes aimed at welfare, modernization, and youth engagement in the handloom sector. The Ekta handloom exhibition will continue till August 13, allowing visitors to explore the richness and beauty of Odisha’s textile history.
