India (Commonwealth Union)_ Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai has achieved a remarkable feat in the field of organ transplantation, successfully completing 535 solid organ transplants in the past six years. This includes 327 kidney transplants, 200 liver transplants, with the majority performed on children, and eight heart transplants. In addition, the hospital has extended its services beyond national borders, conducting 18 kidney transplants and 12 liver transplants for international patients.

Despite these accomplishments, the demand for organs far exceeds the available supply, with only approximately 5% of requests being fulfilled. To address this issue, the hospital collaborates with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to offer financial assistance to patients in need. The significance of Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai’s achievement cannot be overstated. Since 2017, the hospital has been instrumental in transforming the lives of countless individuals through solid organ transplants.
The inspiring story of Faiyad Ali Abdul Sayyed exemplifies the life-changing impact of the hospital’s transplant program. After three years of searching for a new lease on life, Faiyad underwent a successful heart transplant at Apollo Hospitals Navi Mumbai in May. He expressed his gratitude, noting that the hospital promptly identified his condition, leading to a new heart within 13 months. Two months post-transplant, he is now healthy and thriving, thanks to the hospital’s exceptional care.
Santosh Marathe, CEO of the western region, highlighted the hospital’s accomplishments, which encompassed kidney, liver, and heart transplants. Remarkably, the hospital also performed 18 kidney transplants and 12 liver transplants for international patients, underscoring its commitment to extending its expertise beyond national borders. However, the demand for organ transplants in India remains alarmingly high. Over 500,000 people require organ transplants annually, with 40,000 individuals in need of liver transplants and approximately 200,000 in need of kidney transplants. Regrettably, only about 5% of these demands can be met owing to organ shortages and limited accessibility to transplantation services. Tragically, many lives are lost while awaiting life-saving transplants.

Dr. Amol Kumar Patil, senior consultant specializing in kidney transplant and robotic surgery, emphasized the hospital’s dedication to supporting patients facing financial challenges. With the hospital’s proactive management and the collaborative efforts of NGOs, they strive to ensure that every patient receives the necessary transplant, overcoming financial barriers. Organ transplants, particularly cadaver organ transplants, play a crucial role in addressing the pressing need for life-saving interventions in India. Apollo Hospitals, with its rich history in organ transplantation, has been at the forefront of this vital healthcare domain since 1984. Their pioneering initiatives, such as establishing India’s first organ transplant registry and conducting groundbreaking surgeries, demonstrate their unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes and transforming lives through organ transplantation.
