Aviation and Airlines (Commonwealth Union) _ Air Canada has launched Points Matching Week, the largest annual fundraiser organized by its frequent flyer program, Aeroplan. Running from today through October 8th, the initiative aims to donate up to 40 million miles to the Air Canada Foundation, specifically supporting the Hospital Transportation Program. This program assists families across Canada whose children require medical treatment by providing transportation services. During Points Matching Week, Aeroplan will match member donations by up to 20 million miles, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Hospital Transportation Program.
Aeroplan, with approximately five million members worldwide, recently enhanced its services by offering free messaging onboard Air Canada flights. Additionally, Aeroplan points can be earned and redeemed on various Star Alliance carriers and through agreements with airlines such as Emirates.
The Hospital Transportation Program serves 15 pediatric hospitals across Canada, providing relief to families whose children need to travel for medical treatment. The points collected during this initiative will contribute to supporting children across the country. Partners including TD, CIBC, and Avis Budget Group will also participate, further boosting the total number of donated miles.
Last year, Points Matching Week raised $1.4 million and 2.92 million miles, facilitating 226 flights for 179 children and their families through the Hospital Transportation Program. The initiative aims to surpass these achievements this year and continue its support for children’s health and well-being.
The Air Canada Foundation, established in 2012, raises funds through donations from passengers during flights and collection tins in Maple Leaf airport lounges. The foundation channels these funds to charitable organizations dedicated to improving children’s health and well-being. Valérie Durand, a spokesperson for the Air Canada Foundation, expressed gratitude for the generosity of Aeroplan and its members, highlighting the significant impact of their contributions in helping children access necessary medical care, often far from home. The partnership between airlines and charities remains a common practice in the industry, allowing carriers to contribute to charitable causes and make a positive impact on communities.
