India (Commonwealth) _ After the term ended on November 30, current ICC head Greg Barclay has decided not to seek a third term on Tuesday, which stoked concerns over BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s future at the international cricket council (ICC) that oversees cricket around the world.
Shah’s intention to run for the chairmanship will be clear by August 27, the deadline for nominations. Barclay is a New Zealand-born lawyer who has chaired the International Criminal Court (ICC) for four of his three terms as a member of the court.
“ICC Chair Greg Barclay notified the Board that he will not run for reelection when his current term ends at the end of November. According to a media release from the ICC, Barclay was chosen as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020 before being re-elected in 2022.
According to ICC rules, the chairman will be selected by a simple majority of nine votes (51%) cast. There will be sixteen ballots in this election. The incumbent required a two-thirds majority to hold the position of chairman.
“As of August 27, 2024, current directors must submit candidates for the next chair. If more than one candidate submits a nomination, an election will be conducted with an election, and the next Chair’s tenure will start on December 1, 2024.” In the ICC boardroom, Shah is regarded as one of the most powerful individuals. At now, he is the chairman of the ICC’s Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) subcommittee, which holds immense authority.
The majority of the 16 voting members hold a favorable opinion of him. Shah will serve as BCCI secretary for a more year, after which he will be required to take a three-year hiatus starting in October 2025.
A Supreme Court-approved BCCI constitution states that an office bearer may hold office for six years before having to take a three-year cooling-off period. An individual may hold office for a total of eighteen years, nine in a state association and nine in the BCCI.
Shah will have four years remaining in the BCCI if he chooses to go to the ICC with one year remaining in his secretary ship. He may be the youngest chairman in ICC history at 35. Past Indian heads of the ICC include Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
Greg Barclay, the current chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), has decided not to seek a third term and will step down from the role on November 30. Barclay’s move has intensified conjecture on Jay Shah, the secretary of the BCCI, and his potential to lead the ICC.
The deadline for submitting nominations for the position of chairman is Tuesday, August 27.
“ICC Chair Greg Barclay informed the Board that, at the expiration of his present term at the end of November, he will not seek reelection.
Prior to being re-elected in 2022, Barclay was selected as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, according to a media statement from the ICC. Shashank Manohar, N Srinivasan, Jagmohan Dalmiya, and Sharad Pawar were the previous leaders of the highest cricket regulatory body.
At now, Shah is in charge of the Finance and Commercial Affairs (F&CA) subcommittee of the ICC. He is still the secretary of the BCCI for another year, after which he must serve a three-year obligatory cooling-off period beginning in October 2025.
The process of electing a new chairman has commenced, according to the International Cricket Council (ICC). It begins immediately, and interested parties must submit their nominations by August 27 at the latest.
It is now certain that the ICC will have a new chairman regardless of Shah’s candidacy, as current chairman Greg Barclay has chosen not to run for a third term. The New Zealander’s resignation from the position will take effect at the end of November, as announced by the ICC. On December 1, the new chairman will assume leadership.
The incoming chairman, in contrast to the current one, will serve a three-year term. The Chair’s current tenure is set for two years. Prior to being re-elected in November 2022, Barclay was selected as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020.
