India anticipates sizable worker turnout in UAE

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to the United Arab Emirates holds significant events, including the inauguration of the country’s largest Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi on February 14. Preceding this momentous occasion is ‘Ahalan Modi,’ a major diaspora event where the Prime Minister will address thousands of attendees, including around 6,000-7,000 Indian-origin workers.

‘Ahalan’ translates to ‘hello and welcome’ in Arabic, setting the tone for the warm reception awaiting the Prime Minister at the Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Registrations for the event have surpassed 60,000, with confirmations for attendance currently being issued.

Nisha Singh, a senior virologist and event spokesperson, highlighted the significance of this diaspora gathering, recalling the last such event, ‘Marhaba Modi,’ held nine years ago during Mr. Modi’s visit to Dubai in 2015. Dr. Singh, who played a pivotal role in managing the COVID-19 helpline for Indians in Dubai, emphasized the community’s eagerness to organize this event, driven by their strong ties with both Indian and UAE authorities.

Reflecting on Mr. Modi’s previous visit to the UAE in 2015, interactions with Indian workers at the ICAD Residential Labour Camp underscored the Prime Minister’s commitment to engaging with the diaspora. This forthcoming event will also welcome school children, with a vibrant cultural program planned by community members. Dr. Singh noted the collaborative efforts of over 1,500 volunteers dedicated to ensuring a seamless experience for all attendees.

However, the focal point of the Prime Minister’s visit remains the inauguration of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Hindu Mandir. Situated on approximately 27 acres of land in Abu Dhabi, the temple’s construction began in 2019, generously supported by a land donation from the UAE government.
