India at the forefront of global climate action

New Delhi (Commonwealth Union)_ In a landmark announcement during India’s 78th Independence Day address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi proudly declared that India is the only G20 nation to have met its climate targets under the 2015 Paris Agreement ahead of schedule. Speaking from the historic Red Fort, Modi highlighted India’s pioneering efforts in addressing climate change, which have both reassured and surprised the international community.

“I want to tell the world about the strength of my country’s people. My country and its people have accomplished what other G20 nations have not. We have met the climate targets set under the Paris Agreement ahead of schedule, and we are proud of it,” Modi asserted. This achievement places India at the forefront of global climate action, distinguishing it among the world’s largest economies.

As part of its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement, India has committed to achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel-based electricity installed capacity by 2030. Currently, the nation boasts a power generation capacity of 446 GW, with approximately 195 GW derived from non-fossil energy sources. Modi expressed confidence that India will not only meet but potentially exceed this ambitious target, which is essential for limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

“This is crucial for humanity and will serve as a guarantee of a bright future for our children,” the Prime Minister emphasised, underscoring the broader implications of India’s environmental leadership.

Additionally, Modi outlined a series of initiatives aimed at achieving India’s 2070 net-zero target, including the complete electrification of the country’s railways, the PM Surya Ghar initiative, and the promotion of electric vehicles. Central to this green transition is India’s Green Hydrogen Mission, which Modi described as pivotal in transforming the nation into a global hub for green hydrogen. “We have made policies and are working rapidly in that direction,” he noted.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the economic benefits of this energy transition, particularly the creation of “green jobs,” which he believes will position India as a leader in the global green economy. “India intends to seize these opportunities first,” Modi declared, signalling the country’s commitment to sustainable development and its role as a global leader in the fight against climate change.
