India (Commonwealth Union)_ In a visionary proposal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has advocated for the launch of a new initiative named ‘Wed in India‘, akin to ‘Make in India’. Addressing affluent industrialists at the first session of the Uttarakhand Global Investors Summit, he urged them to embrace this movement by choosing the state of Uttarakhand as a prime destination for at least one luxury wedding annually, envisioning the region as an emerging and pristine wedding location.

Expressing concern over the prevailing trend of affluent families choosing foreign locales for destination weddings, PM Modi emphasized the necessity for a paradigm shift. He underscored the idea that wealthy business families should opt for India as the venue for destination weddings, thereby redirecting these grand ceremonies from abroad to domestic locales. Quoting a saying, PM Modi said, “There is an old saying that marriages are made in heaven. But then why are young couples going abroad for their wedding instead of coming to the land of gods (Devbhoomi). My prescription to the young and rich couples is that there should be a movement like ‘Wed in India’ on the lines of Made in India”.

Championing the concept of ‘Wed in India,’ Modi suggested that if wealthy families commit to having their destination weddings in Uttarakhand for the next five years, the state could potentially evolve into a global wedding hub. He envisioned the consequential growth, asserting that even if 5,000 marriages occur annually in the state as a result of this initiative, it would catalyze the development of essential infrastructure. Highlighting India’s transformative potential, the Prime Minister encouraged citizens to make collective decisions for the greater good. He depicted Uttarakhand as a land of immense potential and shared his personal bond with the state, expressing gratitude for the developmental contributions it made during his early years spent in the hills.

Furthermore, Modi’s vision aligns with the overarching objective of promoting domestic destinations for significant events, not only promoting growth in local economies but also positioning India as a favored choice for international events. His call for ‘Wed in India’ reflects a strategic approach to harnessing the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage for global events, promoting both economic development and international recognition.
