Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Mayor Karen Bass and the Indian-American community in Los Angeles are urging the Indian government to establish a consulate in the city, which currently lacks one. The United States currently hosts five Indian consulates located in New York, San Francisco, Chicago, Houston, and Atlanta. During Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit in June, it was revealed that India would open two new consulates in the U.S., with one designated for Seattle. However, local Indian-American organizations and Mayor Bass are advocating for the second consulate to be located in Los Angeles.

In a recent letter addressed to India’s Ambassador to the U.S., Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Mayor Bass expressed her request, stating that she would be honored to collaborate in opening and providing continuous support for this crucial engagement platform. She highlighted the mutual benefits of a consulate in Los Angeles, emphasizing tourism as a significant source of interaction. Los Angeles has invested in India through a dedicated Tourism Office that opened in 2019 and remained operational during the Covid-19 pandemic, indicating a commitment to fostering bilateral ties.

With over 100,000 Indian visitors to Los Angeles annually, Mayor Bass believes that a consulate would not only offer essential services but also serve as a key partner in expanding bilateral cooperation. The absence of an Indian consulate in Los Angeles has been a notable gap, and the mayor and the Indian-American community see this as an opportune time to rectify it. The proposed consulate could contribute significantly to cultural, economic, and diplomatic exchanges between India and Los Angeles, enhancing the relationship between the two regions.

This initiative aligns with the broader goal of strengthening diplomatic ties and facilitating smoother consular services for the Indian diaspora in the U.S. The potential consulate in Los Angeles would join the existing network of consulates, further deepening India’s presence and engagement across the United States. As discussions unfold, the hope is that the establishment of a consulate in Los Angeles will be realized, bringing added convenience and fostering closer connections between India and the vibrant city known for its cultural diversity and economic significance.
