Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ A bipartisan resolution has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives to honor the shared democratic values, religious diversity, human rights, and rule of law between the United States and India. Spearheaded by Congressman Tom Suozzi, a Democrat, this resolution has secured the backing of 36 lawmakers from both Democratic and Republican parties.

The resolution celebrates the strong and beneficial connections between India and the U.S., particularly highlighting the impressive achievements of the Indian diaspora, which numbers over four million. It points out that a significant 80% of Indian Americans hold college degrees, showcasing their success and influence in various facets of American society.

Furthermore, the resolution acknowledges India’s rich history of religious coexistence, home to flourishing Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, and Jain communities. It also notes that 80% of Indian immigrants in the U.S. identify as Hindu, contributing to the 1% of the U.S. population that practices Hinduism.

Emphasizing the significance of the India-U.S. partnership, the resolution describes it as one of the world’s most vital democratic alliances, grounded in shared principles of democracy, religious pluralism, human rights, freedom, and the rule of law.

A special commendation is given to BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) for its impactful presence in the U.S. Founded by Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921-2016), BAPS established its first Hindu mandir in the U.S. on August 4, 1974, in New York City. Over the past 50 years, BAPS has expanded to over 100 mandirs across the country, providing a welcoming and spiritual haven for thousands of families. These mandirs offer not only a place for worship but also fellowship, communal meals, educational programs, and activities for all ages, creating a true home for the faithful.

The resolution also honors the countless contributions of BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha and its volunteers over the last five decades in the United States, recognizing their efforts in fostering community and spiritual growth.
