UK (Commonwealth Union)_ Tushar Kumar, 23, has made history as the youngest Indian-origin mayor in the UK. The young Labour councillor was sworn in as the mayor of Elstree and Borehamwood at a ceremony that grabbed the nation’s attention for his remarkable achievement at such a young age. Kumar’s appointment is seen as a strong indication of increasing engagement of youth in British politics and local government. His journey from student politics to public office exemplifies a rising trend of younger leaders stepping into important civic roles and helping to shape the development of their communities.
A graduate in political science from King’s College London, Kumar first joined the Elstree and Borehamwood Town Council in 2023. Before becoming mayor, he served as deputy mayor and gained recognition for his active role in community affairs. Following the ceremony, Kumar described the moment as “an incredible honor” and said becoming the youngest Indian-origin mayor in UK history was a proud milestone in his life. He also thanked former mayor Dan Ozarow for his support and guidance during his time as deputy mayor. Kumar also welcomed Councillor Linda Smith as his deputy for the upcoming term.

Kumar believes meaningful change begins at the grassroots level. As one of the youngest councilors elected while still studying in London, he has consistently encouraged young people to become more involved in civic life and public service. He says his focus as mayor will be staying connected with residents, supporting charities and local organizations, and inspiring more young voices to participate in leadership roles. Outside politics, Kumar has built experience in public policy, research, education, and social initiatives. He previously worked as a policy advisor at the Department for Work and Pensions and also served as a research analyst for a national LGBTQ+ charity.

Kumar has also supported literacy and youth empowerment schemes through the Bookmark Reading Charity. Kumar has also been very active within the British-Indian community, reportedly teaching children Hindi and helping to organise celebrations for Indian festivals like Diwali and Holi. Kumar’s rise is part of the growing influence of the Indian diaspora in British politics, with more and more people of Indian origin occupying high-profile roles in the UK over the past two decades. During his time as mayor, Kumar selected WD6 Food Support as his official charity, showing his commitment to supporting vulnerable residents and creating community support networks.
