Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ Canadian authorities have taken significant action against an Indian-origin cargo theft ring operating in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and Peel regional municipality. The investigation, known as Project Big Rig, was launched in March to address a series of tractor-trailer and cargo thefts that had been plaguing the region. After thorough investigations, 15 individuals of Indian descent from different cities in the GTA were arrested, and a total of 73 charges were brought against them.

The stolen cargo, consisting of various commercial goods, ATVs, and vehicles, was traced back to the suspects, who were allegedly involved in selling the stolen items at flea markets and stores. The authorities were able to recover property worth an estimated 9.2 million Canadian dollars, which included 6.9 million dollars’ worth of stolen cargo and 2.2 million dollars’ worth of stolen tractor-trailers. The scale of the thefts and the subsequent recovery of the stolen goods highlighted the severity of the criminal ring’s operations

Detective Mark Haywood of the Peel Regional Police revealed that the group of suspects had targeted cargos of different sizes and managed to steal 28 tractor-trailers across six GTA locations. They utilized various methods, such as cutting fences and driving away with the trucks or stealing them while the drivers were on breaks or sleeping.

Deputy Chief Nick Milinovich of Peel Police’s investigative and emergency services noted that several of those arrested were repeat offenders, suggesting a pattern of organized criminal activity. The arrested individuals, including Balkar Singh, Ajay Ajay, Manjeet Padda, and others, are facing multiple charges in connection with the thefts.

The success of Project Big Rig reflects the effectiveness of the joint task force’s efforts to dismantle the cargo theft ring. The police have indicated that more arrests related to cargo and auto thefts are anticipated later this year, as they continue their vigilant efforts to combat criminal activities in the region. The operation’s significance is not only in apprehending the suspects but also in recovering valuable stolen property, providing some relief to victims of these thefts.
