Indian doctor wins Game-Changing Innovator award at COP28

-

India (Commonwealth Union)_ Dr. Atul Shah, a distinguished plastic surgeon from India, was honored with the Game-Changing Innovator Award at COP28 for his groundbreaking contributions. Over thirty years ago, Dr. Shah recognized the potential of simple surgical interventions, devoid of specialized equipment, in addressing deformities afflicting leprosy-affected patients. His ‘One in Four Lasso’ operative techniques were published in the European Journal of Hand Surgery, focusing on providing effective solutions to those in need. The genesis of Dr. Shah’s innovation arose from the realization that the lack of adequate care for malodorous and poorly bandaged unhealed foot wounds was a pressing issue.

In response, he conceptualized a ‘self-care kit’ designed to empower patients in managing their conditions independently. This ingenious solution was seamlessly incorporated into India’s National Leprosy Eradication Programme in 2007, positively impacting 80,000 individuals across the nation. Acknowledging Dr. Shah’s commitment to the welfare of leprosy-affected individuals, then Chief Minister Narendra Modi (now PM) extended support for his efforts. This model, originating in Gujarat, gained traction in other states as well. Recently, at the UN Climate Change COP-28 in Dubai, Dr. Shah received the 2023 REACH (Recognizing Excellence Around Champions of Health) Game Changing Innovator award, underscoring his status as an unsung hero in global health.

The award ceremony unfolded at the Reaching the Last Mile Forum during COP28’s Health Day. Amidst 800 applications and 15 finalists across various categories, Dr. Shah emerged as the chosen innovator in the Game Changer Innovations category. His brainchild, the Comprehensive Self-Care kit, addresses challenges related to foot ulcers and patient isolation, providing essential dressing materials for leprosy patients. Expressing his delight at the accolade, Dr. Shah emphasized the broader context of the Reach the Last Mile Forum, where organizations pledged US$ 777 million to eliminate neglected tropical diseases, including leprosy and lymphatic filariasis in India.

Leprosy, caused by Mycobacterium Leprae bacteria, mainly affects the peripheral nervous system, resulting in skin lesions, numbness, and deformities. The COVID-19 pandemic saw a decline in detected cases, but in 2021-2022, the Union Health Ministry reported approximately 75,000 new cases, contributing to a rise in patients with grade 2 disabilities. Dr. Shah highlighted that of the newly detected cases, at least 2.4 percent exhibited grade 2 disability, necessitating attention not only in terms of treatment but also aids, appliances, and reconstructive surgery for full recovery.

Dr. Shah stressed the importance of public awareness campaigns to encourage early and voluntary reporting of signs and symptoms, advocating for early case detection to prevent deformities. He argued that the removal of stigma and discrimination is essential to conveying the message that leprosy is curable. He emphasized the need for training healthcare workers and Accredited Social Health Activists (ASHAs) to spread this message effectively, citing the success of the Special Leprosy Case Detection Campaign (LCDC) in early detection and deformity prevention.
