Indian Store employee accuses Canadian Police of appalling behaviour

Diaspora (Commonwealth Union) _ A legal battle has erupted in the Canadian province of Manitoba as Harjot Singh, an Indian-origin convenience store worker, files a lawsuit against Winnipeg police officer Jeffrey Norman.

Singh alleges that Norman violated his rights by conducting a warrantless search of his workplace, threatening deportation, and using excessive force. The incident, which occurred on December 2 last year, reportedly left Singh so traumatized that he resigned from his job. The lawsuit contends that Norman’s actions were discriminatory based on national or ethnic origin and included battery, false imprisonment, arbitrary detention, and unreasonable search and seizure.

In the statement of claim filed in the Manitoba Court of King’s Bench, Singh details how Norman attempted to enter the temporarily closed store, prompting Singh to unlock the door. The police officer then proceeded to search the premises without a warrant. During the search, Norman allegedly questioned Singh and issued threats of deportation if cooperation was not forthcoming.

Although the allegations in the lawsuit have not been tested in court, they shed light on the broader issue of police conduct and potential abuse of power. The legal action seeks unspecified damages, encompassing general, constitutional, and punitive categories. Additionally, the lawsuit calls for a judge to mandate the City of Winnipeg to implement a remedial education program for the Winnipeg Police Service

Notably, this isn’t the first time Norman has faced legal scrutiny, as the CBC reports that he has been named in at least two previous lawsuits alleging excessive use of force. The verdict of this case could carry implications for the ongoing discourse on police accountability and the imperative for reforms within law enforcement agencies. The decision may influence discussions surrounding the measures needed to address systemic issues and promote accountability, potentially shaping the trajectory of efforts to enhance transparency and fairness within policing.
