Mumbai, India (CU)_ According to Dr Ravindra Ramadwar, head of the Indian Academy of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS), at least two insurance firms have agreed to provide coverage for the unborn infant against birth abnormalities and surgical complications during infancy. Dr Ramadwar made this announcement during the IAPS’ 47th annual conference last week. He stated, “The executive committee of IAPS had long deliberations with insurance companies and finally a breakthrough has been achieved.”

According to Dr Ramadwar, when it comes to family issues, at the moment insurers do not cover birth deformities or surgical complications during infancy; due to this, many couples choose for abortion when antenatal sonography detects abnormalities. Hence, such abortions could be prevented with surgical and medical insurance. Dr Ravindra Ramadwar said, “Many insurance companies do not offer cover for birth defects or surgical problems during infancy. This is a major cost burden for many families and parents who have just recently commenced their jobs and are not having the financial liberty to get their child treated at hospitals of their choice”.

According to the media, private-sector insurers Star Health and Allied Insurance have agreed to provide coverage for the unborn infant. In addition, the IAPS is in discussion with other insurance companies about coverage. Every year, nearly 1.7 million infants in India are born with birth abnormalities. According to Dr S Prakash, managing director of Star Health, his organization has completed the necessary arrangements to launch an insurance plan for the unborn child and is seeking clearance from the IRDAI.
