Florence Nightingale, an English nurse, social reformer, and statistician who formed the main foundations of modern nursing, was born on May 12, 1820, and her contributions and legacy are commemorated on this day. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), though nurses make up more than half of all health workers worldwide, there is still a critical deficit, with 5.9 million additional nurses required immediately, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. The theme of International Nurses Day 2021 is  –  Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A Vision for Future Healthcare.

Every year, International Nurses Day is commemorated to respect and glorify the selfless services of nurses and healthcare staff. They are on the front lines of the battle against the fatal coronavirus pandemic. They are working round the clock without a break beyond their call of duty to save patients, and many have been infected with the deadly virus as a result. International Nurses Day is observed on May 12th, and the world is thanking and lauding the nurses who have been risking their lives to care for millions of COVID-19 patients.
