AFRICA ( Commonwealth Union) _ Ashraf El Nour, Regional Director for Southern Africa for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Malawi is making good strides in the management of migration. During a workshop for distribution of the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) assessment report for Malawi, which was hosted by IOM in partnership with the Ministry of Homeland Security, he made the comments on Friday in Lilongwe.

El Nour claimed that in terms of managing migration, the nation is on the right track. He further stated that what I have seen from the report that has been presented today is that Malawi has achieved significant progress in managing migration, as evidenced by the adoption of the 1990 International Labour Organization (ILO) Convention by the Malawian government in 2020, for instance. Moreover, the adopted framework respects migrants’ rights to work in foreign countries with their families, and that is a huge progress which Malawi made as not many countries globally adopted that framework. I hope that will encourage other countries to also join.

He continued by saying that the nation had done well in terms of involving its nationals living abroad in a variety of national affairs, notably by having a plan and structure for doing so.He added that his group will keep collaborating with the government, via the Ministry of Homeland Security, to implement various measures that would enable the nation’s migration system be totally improved. We have a shared responsibility for immigration and migration, thus we have been collaborating closely with the Ministry of Homeland Security on a variety of projects, including the creation of the nation’s national migration policy.

Oliver Kumbambe, Principal Secretary (P/S), Ministry of Homeland Security, praised IOM for helping the government enhance the nation’s immigration system.

Additionally, he urged other groups in the nation to work with the government to establish programs that address the nation’s migration-related problems.
