on this IPCC report to provide them with some direction in their climate efforts, although The Australian Financial Review revealed that it will not offer much hope to the global community ahead of UN climate talks in November.

Following an extensive study by some of the top climate scientists in the world, the IPCC authors are expected to warn that there is greater than 50 per cent chance that global temperatures may punch through the critical 1.5°C threshold by early 2030s, a decade earlier than anticipated three years ago.

The report is expected to launch alarming global headlines, and intensify calls on the World’s major emitters to accelerate efforts to minimise their greenhouse gas emissions ahead of COP26 later this year. It will also emphasise the fact that more the world emits this decade, the more likely to reach a point where costly strategies like direct air capture would be needed to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, as set out by the Paris agreement.

The IPCC document, nearly 4000 pages long, is the first report to be authored by more than 230 climate experts following the review of over 14,000 scientific papers since its 2018 edition. The group is expected to attribute climate change caused by human activity as a major driver of the surging natural disasters in recent years, including the Australian bushfires and the wildfires in California.
