IPL 2024 to introduce two bouncers per over

-

India (Commonwealth) _ In order to encourage a fairer duel between bat and ball, the IPL 2024 will allow bowlers to unleash two bouncers every over. This modification in playing conditions was tested during India’s domestic T20 event, the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.

Saurashtra veteran Jaydev Unadkat, who has played for numerous IPL teams and has set his base price for the IPL 2024 auction at INR 50 lakh (about. USD 60,000), has welcomed the development.

I think two bouncers each over is really important, and it’s one of those things that provides the bowler an advantage over batters, Unadkat told the media. Because, for example, if I bowl a slower bouncer… the batsman in the preceding situation is certain that there will be no more bouncers. Even if you bowl one slower bouncer in the early part of the over, you can still utilize one more [in the over] in this situation. Someone who is weak against bouncers will have to improve, giving the bowler another weapon in their arsenal. So, I believe it is a minor alteration with a significant impact, and as a bowler, I believe it is critical to have that regulation.

Unadkat went on to say that fast bowlers will now have additional alternatives for containing hitters at the death. You have one more choice in the death overs, he added. As a result, it became more yorker-oriented [bowling] in death overs for quick bowlers. It can’t be yorker, slower ball, and bouncers since two bouncers equals an over. Even if you don’t bowl the second bouncer, the batsman has a reasonable expectation that the bowler would.

The Impact Player rule, which was implemented for the first time in IPL 2023, will be maintained. In addition to the starting XI, a side must list four substitutes at the toss under this regulation. They can choose any of the four subs to be their Impact Player.

If a club lists four foreign players in their starting lineup, the Impact Player can only be an Indian. This is to keep the number of international players every game to four per side, as has been the case since the IPL’s beginning. If a club has three or fewer abroad players in its starting XI, they can bring in an overseas player as the Impact Player.

However, the arriving foreign player should be one of the four substitutes selected at the toss. The Impact Player rule has reduced the importance of all-rounders, with players like Venkatesh Iyer, Vijay Shankar, and Shivam Dube mostly serving as hitters for their respective teams last season.

For the time being, the trading window is closed, but it will reopen on December 20, the day following the mini-auction, and will stay open for up to a month before the 2024 season begins. The IPL 2024 season is expected to take place between March 22 and the end of May, with the official schedule to be revealed once the Election Commission has finalized the polling dates for India’s general elections.

Furthermore, IPL 2023 became the first to feature an Impact Player – one substitute who can bat and bowl – however the league has ruled that the Impact Player may only be an Indian unless a team’s starting XI contains less than four outside players.  The substitute may act or participate in the same manner as any other regular player.

It’s not that difficult. A team must list four replacements at the toss in addition to the playing XI. They can choose any of the four subs to be their Impact Player. A captain can select an Impact Player and bring them in at the start of an innings, at the conclusion of an over, when a wicket falls, or when a batter retires.
