Ministers seem to intend to secure a youth mobility scheme with the EU by the next year, by the end of 2026. This comes as a broader reset of Britain’s relationship with Europe, only 6 years after leaving the EU bloc.
Labor strategists believe that there’s a growing political benefit to ministers stepping up their criticism of Brexit and arguing more openly now for sustaining a closer relationship with Europe.
During a speech last Monday, 1 December, Keir Starmer attacked what he termed as ‘wild promises’ made by Brexit campaigners, arguing that the UK was still dealing with the consequences today, both in the British economy and in trust.
Starmer stated that the idea of leaving the EU as the solution to all British cares and concerns has clearly been proven wrong. However, Starmer stressed that he would always respect the outcome of the British referendum.
The deputy prime minister, David Lammy, also commented last week that Turkey, which has a partial customs union with the EU, seemed to benefit from its recent economic growth. Lammy is quoted as having added to the news agent’s podcast that rejoining the EU customs union was not currently where Britain is, but that it was self-evident that Brexit had probably badly damaged the British economy.
The government views the youth mobility scheme as one of several foreseen agreements that can be finalized during the coming months. The government envisioned this scheme to provide tangible benefits to the British people.
