A tropical depression was first announced to residents of the small Island on 16th September but within 2 days, a category five super storm with heightened Ocean surface temperature and low wind shear, the arrival of hurricane Maria, the strongest possible hurricane.
Kalinago territory was first to hit and hit hard. When it made landfall in Dominica, it claimed lives and cost the island over 3.5 billion East Caribbean dollars, equivalent 226 % GDP in 2016, in losses and damage. It is known to be the toughest hurricane they have ever faced.
