‘It’s not just about the airports, it’s about balancing the national economy,’ says Shannon Airport Group CEO

DUBLIN IRELAND – to say that the travel industry is finally getting back to its feet would probably be the right thing. But it being said there are other issues being faced by certain sectors of the industry.

Starting with airports. Today we look at the Shannon airport. In its glory days it was known as the jewel in the crown of Ireland’s west coast. It has been trying its best to live up that name but it seems like that an uphill battle and Shannon is not doing so great winning right now.

Shannon Airport was initally a part of the Dublin airport and they were doing really well. It seems that the Shannon airport group wanted a split from the Dublin airport as they thought they could do better on their own.

It seemed that being attached to Dublin airport was a massive credibility and green light for airlines to get slots with them which was pre pandemic. But post pandemic a lot of airlines were looking to cut costs and the easiest thing to do was to have less spaces in international airports.

Now whilst Shannon airport is an impressive airport in its own right you cannot compare it to the Dublin Airport. When it came to the point of choosing which airport got landing rent it was decided that it would be Dublin instead of Shannon.

This is just one of the reasons that Shannon airport is struggling to reclaim its prominence despite a split from what was then Dublin Airport Authority almost a decade ago. At the time of that split in 2013, then-transport minister Leo Varadkar said the airport needed to boost traffic to 2.5 million by 2021 if it was to have a future.
