J.K. Rowling Airbrushed…

-

J.K. Rowling’s presence has been expunged from a prominent US institution, the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP) in Seattle, citing her contentious anti-trans remarks as the catalyst for their decision. The museum’s curators opted to dissociate from Rowling’s artifacts to minimize her influence.

In response to mounting concerns, MoPOP released a statement indicating that while their solution might not be flawless, it was a provisional step while they deliberate on long-term strategies.

This move followed a May blog entry by transgender project manager Chris Moore titled “She-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named,” wherein he condemned Rowling’s “transphobic” outlook and detailed the museum’s approach toward the Harry Potter exhibits.

Moore’s post humorously notes, “There’s a certain cold, heartless, joy-sucking entity in the world of Harry Potter and, this time, it is not actually a Dementor.” He proceeds to express that despite internet theories suggesting the books lacked an author, Rowling’s vociferous propagation of divisive views invalidated such claims.

While the Museum of Pop Culture will still feature memorabilia from the Harry Potter movies within the “Fantasy: Worlds of Myth and Magic” exhibit, they have deliberately purged any references to Rowling from the display. The museum’s rationale is to duly acknowledge the contributions of actors, prop designers, and costume creators in the Fantasy gallery.

Rowling has consistently attracted criticism from LGBTQIA+ organizations and her own fan base due to her association with trans-exclusionary radical feminist (TERF) rhetoric, which contests the gender identity of trans women.

Her tweet from 2020, “If sex isn’t real, there’s no same-sex attraction,” stirred considerable backlash. Rowling asserted that her perspective wasn’t rooted in malice but rather in honesty, emphasizing that discussing the concept of sex remains essential.

Although the author has defended herself against allegations of transphobia and highlighted support from certain Potter enthusiasts, her firm stance has been reiterated over time. In 2022, she expressed opposition to Scotland’s gender recognition bill, and in a podcast earlier this year, she adamantly professed her disinterest in dwelling on her legacy, emphasizing her focus on the present.

As the Museum of Pop Culture distances itself from Rowling’s viewpoints, the ongoing discourse surrounding her perspectives within the context of her literary legacy continues to generate debate and reflection.
