Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – First Minister John Swinney has praised the Scottish athletes competing in the 2024 Olympic Games, noting how their performances in Paris will serve as an inspiration to future generations.

Scottish athletes, whether competing individually or in teams, won three gold medals, four silver medals, and six bronze medals. These achievements contributed to Team GB’s total of 65 medals, underscoring the exceptional talent present in Scotland across various sports.

In both individual and team events, gold medals were secured by Duncan Scott, Scott Brash, and Sholto Carnegie. Duncan Scott, Jack Carlin, Josh Kerr, and Neah Evans earned silver medals in their respective events. Bronze medals were won by Beth Potter (twice), Rowan McKellar, Nicole Yeargin (twice), and Jack Carlin.

Several Scots set new Scottish and British records, including British Records for Josh Kerr in the men’s 1500 meters, Jack Carlin’s silver in the men’s cycling team sprint, and a new Scottish record for Keanna MacInnes in her women’s 100 meters butterfly opening heat.

Nearly two-thirds of the Scottish athletes selected for Team GB are women, including Eilish McColgan, who became the first Scottish athlete to compete in four Olympic track and field events. The presence of these strong role models is expected to motivate young women and girls across the country to engage in sports.

The First Minister stated that competing globally alongside some of the top sporting talent is a tremendous honor. He further indicated that he knows the entire nation joins him in congratulating the Scottish athletes for their significant contribution to Team GB’s success at these Games.

“All of our athletes have excelled themselves and done themselves and their country proud. I hope they are able to celebrate with their friends, family and the public in the coming days.”

Forbes Dunlop, Chief Executive of sportscotland, stated that Scottish athletes have once again excelled on the global stage. Over the years, Scottish competitors have consistently delivered strong performances across various sports, proving that Scotland’s strategy for developing a pathway to performance sport is yielding results.

Winning an Olympic medal is a testament to the incredible achievements that can be reached through hard work, dedication, and skill. The process of earning a medal is a long and challenging journey, but the rewards are immeasurable not just for Scots Olympians, but Olympians the world over.
