British Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlights energy bill and interest rate cuts, alongside the end of the 2-child benefit cap, and invites his MPs to Chequers.
Starmer intends to attempt to rescue his relationship with disillusioned voters and his own fractious MPs. This initiative is part of a new year effort to reduce the cost of living.
The PM was to give a speech in the coming days, focusing on how his government is focused on reducing living costs. Starmer highlighted recent energy bills and interest rates, besides the end of the two-child benefit cap.
He is expected to reinforce a series of New Year drinks receptions for the Labour MPs at Chequers. He intends to dispel angst about local and devolved elections in 2026, as the party expects heavy losses.

In his New Year’s message, the PM said that voters would begin to see their lives improving in 2026. Chief adviser Morgan McSweeney was of the view that this PM’s utterance has been called ‘the year of proof’.
Starmer stated that in 2026, the choices made by citizens will lead to more people experiencing positive changes in their bills, communities, and health services.
Starmer added that more people were expected to once again have a sense of hope with a belief that things can and will get better. He also expressed that the promise of renewal could become a reality. He was confident that his government would make it a reality.
In a barb targeted at Reform UK, which looks on course to defeat Labour in both Scottish & Welsh elections scheduled in May 2026, Starmer was confident that he was getting Britain back on track. He added that he intends to defeat the decline and division offered by others by staying on course.
