Africa (Commonwealth Union) _ A cyber-attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to computer systems, networks, or devices. These attacks target various forms of information, including personal data, intellectual property, or sensitive business information. Cyber-attacks can take many forms, such as malware infections, phishing scams, ransomware, denial-of-service attacks, and more. The goal is often to exploit vulnerabilities in software, hardware, or human behavior to compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of the targeted system or data. Cybersecurity measures are implemented to prevent, detect, and respond to such attacks.

Kenya’s communications overseer reported an unprecedented surge of 860 million cyber-attacks within the past year. The regulatory body highlighted a significant escalation in the intensity, complexity, and scope of cyber threats directed at the nation’s vital information infrastructure. This starkly contrasts with the 7.7 million cyber-attacks Kenya faced in 2017. In a significant incident this July, Anonymous Sudan, a pro-Russian hacking group, executed a prominent cyber-attack that disrupted access to more than 5,000 government online services. The affected services included applications and renewals for visas, passports, and driving licenses, along with disruptions to online train bookings and mobile money transactions. This targeted attack underscored the vulnerability of government digital infrastructure and the potential impact on critical services and citizen transactions.

The Communications Authority of Kenya revealed that a significant 79% of recorded cyber-attacks in the past year originated from cyber criminals infiltrating the computer systems of diverse organizations. Furthermore, the regulator noted that 14% of the attacks involved the use of malicious software, while 6.5% focused on cybercriminals overwhelming servers with traffic to overload the infrastructure. The remaining attacks were targeted at web applications, highlighting the diverse tactics employed by cyber threats in the region.

Kenya has become the third most-targeted country for cyber threats in Africa, following Nigeria and South Africa, as reported by the regulator. This surge emphasizes the urgency for increased cybersecurity measures to protect the nation’s digital assets and ensure the integrity of essential services. The evolving cyber threat landscape necessitates a proactive approach to cybersecurity to mitigate risks and safeguard against potential disruptions.
