Europe UK (Commonwealth Union) – This week, Scottish Secretary Alister Jack is embarking on a journey to Vietnam with the aim of enhancing trade and diplomatic ties. Accompanying him on this mission is the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA), as they strive to bolster Scotland’s presence in the Vietnamese export market.

Vietnam has established robust connections in both business and education with Scotland, and it is noteworthy that 2023 commemorates the 50th anniversary of the formal establishment of diplomatic relations between the UK and Vietnam.

During his visit, Mr. Jack’s agenda will be filled with various engagements in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. These activities include engaging in discussions with prominent political figures within the Vietnamese government, co-hosting a whisky reception in Hanoi alongside the SWA for important business delegates, and holding a reception in Ho Chi Minh City to advocate for Scottish products. Additionally, he will pay a visit to the textile manufacturer Coats to gain insights into their operations in Vietnam. Furthermore, Mr. Jack will have the opportunity to meet students at the British University Vietnam (BUV) and witness the signing of a new partnership agreement between BUV and Stirling University.

Alister Jack expresses his deep appreciation for the privilege of advancing UK interests in Vietnam, especially during this significant year, which commemorates 50 years of formal diplomatic relations between the UK and Vietnam. He eagerly anticipates further strengthening and nurturing these robust and vital connections with our Vietnamese allies.

“The UK Government’s post-Brexit free trade agreement with Vietnam offers huge opportunities for Scottish businesses, and I look forward to promoting Scotch and other important Scottish exports in this important market.”

During his visit to Ho Chi Minh City, Mr. Jack will engage in discussions with the city’s political leadership and the National Assembly’s Committee for Foreign Affairs. These conversations aim to enhance and promote stronger bonds and cooperation between the United Kingdom and Vietnam.
