Lib Dems pledge Brexit withdrawal

Europe, UK (Commonwealth Union) – The Liberal Democrats, often referred to as the Lib Dems, are a significant political party in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1988, the party was created as a result of a merger between the Liberal Party and the Social Democratic Party (SDP). Historically, the Liberal Democrats have been the third-largest party in the UK Parliament, often joining hands in the role of a coalition government. Their most significant political influence came in 2010 when they formed a coalition government with the Conservative Party, led by David Cameron.

The Brexit referendum had become an area of key focus and in spite the divisions of support for Brexit following the referendum many political parties showed a more one-sided approach both for and against the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union.

The focus on Brexit has shifted away in recent years with the global economic crisis the resulted from lockdowns during the pandemic along with the Russia – Ukraine war with many supporters of Brexit feeling that it took too long to materialize but which they felt was deliberately blocked by the EU as a deterrent. My opponents had mixed feelings with some feeling that there was need to move on and give Brexit a chance and others calling for a second referendum.

In recent years the Liberal Democrats have faced significant challenges in recent years. The 2015 general election saw a dramatic collapse in their support, reducing their parliamentary representation from 57 seats to just eight.

The Lib Dems have been strong proponents of the European Union, advocating for the UK to remain a member with regards to Brexit.

The leader of the Lib Dems Leader Sir Ed Davey told reporters recently “We believe in the long term we need to be back in the heart of Europe, but we aren’t going to pretend that is going to be easy.”

The pledge is not likely to go down with pro-Brexit supporters who had seen the Brexit delay due to the time taken to negotiate a deal over border issues as a betrayal.
