In the charming village of Wigtown, Scotland, a unique experience awaits literary enthusiasts: a chance to stay in the world’s only bookstore Airbnb. Opened by The Wigtown Festival Company in August 2014, the Open Book has welcomed over 450 guests from around the globe to not only spend the night but also to run the store during the day.

Nestled in the picturesque surroundings of Galloway, the Open Book combines a cozy apartment with a working bookshop, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the literary world. This initiative is part of a broader effort to celebrate books and independent bookstores while fostering a warm community atmosphere.

A Dream Come True

Guests like Daisy Yeung, who traveled from Hong Kong with her long-time friend Lydia Man, are drawn to this unique opportunity. For them and others, the experience transcends traditional lodging; it’s about living out a dream. “There’s no better feeling than somebody buying a book that you put on display,” shared a recent occupant from Austin, Texas.

The Airbnb description captures this enchanting experience perfectly: “A holiday home with a difference, it presents a unique opportunity for visitors to run a real bookshop at the heart of the town’s vibrant community.” From changing book displays to creating inviting messages on the shop blackboard, guests can fully engage with the space.

 A Global Phenomenon

As the first-ever bookshop residency experience, the Open Book has become a sensation, boasting a two-year waiting list filled with eager guests from places as diverse as Hawaii to Beijing. Joyce Cochrane, a chief volunteer from the nearby Old Bank Bookshop, emphasizes the project’s success. “The Open Book has been a way of opening our doors to the world—and because of that, the world has been coming to Wigtown, and they love it,” she says.

The unique offering also allows for flexibility. One guest noted, “There’s no strings attached, no real responsibilities; you can enjoy the time however you like.” This freedom, combined with the intimate setting of a small Scottish town, attracts visitors looking for an escape from their everyday lives.

A Literary Festival to Remember

Timing a visit during the Wigtown Festival, which runs from September 27 to October 6 this year, adds an extra layer of excitement. This annual event showcases the town’s literary heritage, featuring readings, workshops, and discussions that connect locals and visitors alike.

As the sun sets over Wigtown, the streets come alive with book lovers sharing stories and laughter. Whether you’re a seasoned bibliophile or just curious, the Open Book offers a one-of-a-kind experience that merges accommodation with the thrill of running a bookstore.

In a world where experiences often overshadow possessions, the Open Book stands out as a testament to the joy of storytelling, community, and the love of literature. As Daisy Yeung and her friend embrace this adventure, they embody the spirit of Wigtown—a place where books come to life, and every visitor leaves with a story of their own.
