Lake Malawi: kayaking, snorkelling, and lazy beach life

Lake Malawi, which occupies a full fifth of the nation, offers excellent sand beaches and quiet, clear water that is teeming with so many vibrant fish that it frequently feels like you are swimming in a huge aquarium. One of the best vacations in Malawi has a long list of activities at the top, including snorkelling, diving, sailing, and kayaking. However, due to the slow pace of life along the lakeshore, many tourists choose to simply take a “laze and stare” vacation, which involves reading a book while gazing at the water’s shimmering surface.

There are numerous ways to experience the charm of the lake, which is regarded as one of Malawi’s best locations. Stay in a beach lodge near to a neighbourhood fishing community on Cape Maclear or on Likoma Island; alternatively, choose a location that is entirely private and exclusive, like small Mumbo Island or Nkwichi Lodge on the lake’s distant Mozambican shore.

Malawi’s best game viewing is at Liwonde National Park

Liwonde National Park should be your first choice when deciding where in Malawi to go to see the most wildlife. There is a considerable probability that you may witness numerous elephant herds, various antelope species, and a staggering array of bird species. However, a safari in Liwonde is more about having a well-rounded wildlife experience than it is about checking things off a list, making it one of the greatest trips in Malawi.

When you stay at Mvuu Lodge, you can experience boat safaris on the Shire River, which is home to crocodiles and hippopotamuses, early morning bush walks with educated and friendly guides, and evening wildlife viewing from the comfort of your viewing deck. Bliss!

Majete Wildlife Reserve: Big 5 Country

This 70 000-hectare conservation area, which is located in the Lower Shire Valley and is only 70 km southwest of Malawi’s economic city Blantyre, and has recently added lions to its already spectacular collection of large mammals. The Big 5 as well as zebra, hippo, crocodile, and several kinds of antelope can now be found in the little-visited area. And when you add in well over 300 bird species, you have a setting that is well worth a trip, especially when combined with the glittering lake, which is already one of Malawi’s most breathtaking locations.

There are only two lodges in Majete, and Mkulumadzi Lodge, which is renowned for its opulent chalets and exceptional service, is our top selection. Enjoy escorted nature hikes, wildlife drives, and boat safaris at dusk in a gorgeous, serene wilderness environment away from the usual safari hordes.
