Malaysia and Brunei renew Air Service Agreement to enhance connectivity

Malaysia (Commonwealth Union)_ The Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Government of Malaysia signed an Air Services Agreement in Langkawi, Malaysia. During the signing ceremony, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha represented Brunei, while Minister of Transport Anthony Loke Siew Fook represented Malaysia.

The agreement, which is an update of the Air Services Agreement signed in 1992, enhances transportation rights between Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia. The renewed agreement aims to facilitate the implementation of commercial air transport services in a liberal manner, aligned with the latest standards and guidelines provided by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), as well as the regulations and legislation of both countries.

The modernization of the Air Services Agreement also aims to improve air connectivity and create opportunities for cooperation between designated airlines and destinations between Brunei and Malaysia. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim and High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to Malaysia Brigadier General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mahmud bin Haji Saidin @ Haji Mohd Saidin. Further, Minister Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also took part in the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition 2023 (LIMA 23), which took place from May 23 to 27 at the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre (MIEC) in Langkawi, Malaysia.

LIMA 23, jointly hosted by the Ministry of Transport and the Ministry of Defense twice a year, is the 16th exhibition of its kind. In addition to the exhibition, the event also features air transport and maritime conferences, bringing together administrators, regulators, and foreign commercial stakeholders to showcase a variety of maritime and aerospace products, including the latest technological advancements.

Minister Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary also had separate goodwill meetings with the Minister of Transport and the Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation of Somalia and discussed further partnership and exchanged perspectives on shared issues and challenges faced by the two countries. The delegates from Brunei are Ir Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, and other senior ministry officials.
