Malaysia (Commonwealth Union)_ Malaysia lauded the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) latest resolution on the situation in Myanmar and highlighted how important it is for ASEAN to play a leading role in finding a peaceful settlement for the junta-ruled nation. The Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday stating that Malaysia will collaborate closely with ASEAN and its external players to promote these efforts in the interest of the Myanmar people.
“Malaysia had previously called on the UNSC to fulfill its charter-mandated responsibility. This Council (UNSC) also encourages the international community to support the Asean-led mechanism and process in this regard, including the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus,” read the statement from the Ministry.
According to reports, the UNSC passed a resolution on December 21, 2022, condemning the Myanmar military’s human rights crimes ever since the coup on February 1, 2021. The historic resolution, which was passed with 12 affirmative votes and 3 abstentions, demonstrates the rising isolation of the Myanmar military as a result of security force violations that include crimes against humanity and war crimes. This is the first Myanmar-related resolution made by the UN Security Council since the country, formerly known as Burma, gained independence from Britain in 1948. The latest historic resolution passed by the United Nations Security Council on Myanmar also urged the military junta to immediately halt violence and human crimes in the Southeast Asian country and release all political detainees, including former leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint.
The resolution has several allusions to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which issued a five-point consensus against the Myanmar coup in April 2021. It expresses extreme concern over the ongoing state of emergency declared by the military in Myanmar and its devastating effects on the Myanmar people. The resolution also slammed the deaths of pro-democracy campaigners by the military. Earlier, in July, the president of the Security Council issued a statement demanding the immediate release of all unlawfully held detainees, including Win Myint and Suu Kyi.
