Male, Maldives (CU)_ Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appreciated the role of Commonwealth of Nations in advocating equal access to Covid-19 vaccinations and called it as exceptionally grateful. The president in his message of the Commonwealth Day 2021 emphasized that Maldives had completed a year since its re-accession to Commonwealth of Nation in February 2020.
In this respect, he stated that the island nation is proud of everything that was achieved over the course of one year. The president declared that the Commonwealth used to be a champion to member states from larger countries to smaller island countries. Hence, small island states are dependent on the support the organization provides for the achievement of climate adaptation goals, building stronger communities.
The president pointed out that the Maldives appreciates the role played by the organization in promoting fair access to Covid-19 vaccines. The theme for this year’s Commonwealth Day is ” Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming “. On highlighting the theme of the Commonwealth Day, President Solih said it shows the strong connection between the commonwealth countries which holds 2.4 billion population across 54 countries on six continents.
In the course of the Covid 19 pandemic and the extremely difficult circumstances they created, President Solih highlighted the relations, support and goodwill within the countries. In the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Rwanda which is scheduled to begin this year, the President of the Maldives expressed hope of promoting common interests and contributions to the resolution of common challenges. When Maldives re-entered the Commonwealth of Nations on 1 February 2020, the President stated that this denotes the loyalty of his administration to involve in the international community and fulfil the pledges made to citizens.
