Maldives (Commonwealth Union)_Maldives will submit nominations for membership as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the year 2033-2034 and for membership in the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2027-2029. The announcement was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Accordingly, the Ministry said that, if their nominations are successful, the Maldives will become a member of the two major organs of the United Nations for the first time.

“Despite Small Island developing States (SIDS) like the Maldives being under-represented across the UN, the Maldives has consistently demonstrated that even the smallest of countries can make meaningful contributions at the highest levels of decision-making,” the statement issued by the Ministry read. The decision to participate in the two elections stems from the Maldivian government’s dedication to maintaining robust international participation in the multinational arena in its role as a committed member of the international community. Since 2018, the Maldives has consistently contested for the presidency of the seventy-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly and for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council for the years 2023-2025.

Under former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, the Maldives sought a seat on the Security Council in 2018. However, the Maldives received just 46 votes out of the 193 nations that participated in the poll. According to the Foreign Ministry, the decision to apply to the Security Council and ECOSOC was made to assure a prosperous future for the nation. The Maldivian administration expressed confidence in the island nation’s capacity to make meaningful contributions to the global discussion on international peace and security and sustainable development.

The Security Council is the primary organ of the United Nations, tasked with preserving international peace and security. In addition, the United Nations is the top decision-making agency in the international arena. Further, the ECOSOC is the premier organ of the United Nations, charged with implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and coordinating, reviewing, and making recommendations on all economic, social, and environmental problems.
