In 2022, the Maldives will celebrate 50 years of success in the tourism industry, which began in 1972.
According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism, the Maldives has so far received more than 600,000 tourist arrivals during the Golden Jubilee Year. The statistics indicate that between January 1 and May 9, the country received 621,633 visitors, with 131,764 arriving in January, 149,008 in February, 150,739 in March, and 145,286 in April.


Maldives has received 44,843 visitors as of May, which is an increase of 92.4 percent as compared to the same time period in 2021, and a growth of 27.7 percent compared to the 35,119 tourists in the same time period in 2019.
According to reports, although Russia retained its position as the leading source market for Maldives tourism for a major portion of the last year, its market has declined and been displaced by the United Kingdom. As a result, the numbers indicate that as of May 9, the United Kingdom accounts for the most number of arrivals to the Maldives, contributing 12.8% of the total arrivals. India ranks in second with a contribution of 12.5%. Russia comes third with a 9.7 percent contribution.


Additionally, the other leading markets for Maldives tourism are the following countries. Germany accounts for 8.6 percent, Italy accounts for 6.9 percent, the United States accounts for 4.6 percent, France accounts for 4.3 percent, Switzerland accounts for 2.6 percent, Saudi Arabia accounts for 2.1 percent, and Austria ranks tenth with 2 percent of the total number of arrivals.
According to Dr. Abdulla Mausoom, Minister of Tourism, Maldives’ goal is to win the World Leading Destination Award during the golden jubilee year. He also expressed confidence that the country’s tourism success story will reach new heights with the launch of Homestay tourism.
