Europe, Malta (Commonwealth Union) – Nature parks, often regarded as sanctuaries for wildlife and havens for human recreation, play a critical role in our environment and society. These designated natural areas, set aside for conservation and public enjoyment, offer myriad benefits that extend far beyond their picturesque landscapes. Understanding the significance of nature parks reveals why their preservation and expansion should be a priority for communities worldwide.
The Carmelo Dimech Garden in Mosta, spanning over 1,600 square meters, has been transformed with a focus on sustainability and community participation. The project, completed and inaugurated on Monday, was a collaboration between Ambjent Malta, Public Works, and the Mosta Local Council.
The garden’s inauguration was led by Miriam Dalli, the Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration of the Grand Harbour, alongside Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia, Mosta Mayor Joseph Gatt, and local councilors.
This initiative is part of Ambjent Malta’s and Public Works’ ongoing efforts to enhance public spaces and promote environmental sustainability. The garden currently features drought-resistant plants, drip irrigation systems, and mulching to conserve water and protect the soil. More than 3,000 seasonal plants, trees, and shrubs have been introduced to improve the garden’s environment.
Significant elements of the project include a water reservoir with a capacity exceeding 100 cubic meters, designed to capture stormwater and enhance water management. Additionally, the garden now has a solar-powered paving system that powers its water pumps and lighting, along with a new playground that generates renewable energy through children’s movements.
Minister Miriam Dalli made an emphasis on the vital part played by open spaces in enhancing community life saying “The transformation of Ġnien Carmelo Dimech is a testament to our vision for public areas prioritizing sustainability. By creating safe and beautiful spaces, we empower communities to thrive and connect, making every neighbourhood a better place to live and grow.”
Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia highlighted that this new open space project is among the first to be co-financed under the Framework Agreement signed with local councils in recent months. He indicated that this Framework not only supports Maltese local councils but also aims to enhance the quality of life for the public.
