Europe Malta (Commonwealth Union) – The history of traditional Maltese boats is deeply intertwined with the island’s seafaring heritage. These boats, known as “luzzus” and “dghajjes,” have been in use for centuries and have played a pivotal role in the daily lives of the Maltese people. The luzzu is perhaps the most iconic traditional boat in Malta. These colorful, sturdy vessels are easily recognizable by their distinctive eye of Osiris painted on the bow. The eye symbolizes protection from harm and is believed to have its roots in Phoenician and Ancient Egyptian cultures.

Malta’s historic harbors have always been the cherished home of traditional wooden boats, each possessing a distinctive character that mirrors the rich tapestry of the island’s culture. Among these vessels are the iconic il-luzzu, kajjik, firilla, frejgatina, dgħajsa tal-pass, and dgħajsa tal-Latini, all of which not only embody Malta’s unique identity but also captivate tourists from around the globe.

In order to safeguard this precious heritage, the Ministry for National Heritage, the Arts, and Local Government has initiated the Traditional Boats Preservation Scheme, designed to provide support to boat owners in the preservation of these remarkable vessels.

Minister Owen Bonnici says “The launch of the Traditional Boats Preservation Scheme is testament to our commitment in preserving our maritime heritage. By extending financial assistance to boat owners for the upkeep of traditional wooden boats, the scheme ensures that these iconic vessels continue to grace Malta’s harbours, attracting tourists and serving as a reminder of the island’s rich cultural history.”

Minister Bonnici emphasized that this well-structured scheme, in full compliance with EU regulations, offers a sustainable means of protecting an essential facet of our nation’s heritage for generations to come.

Furthermore, Permanent Secretary Joyce Dimech elaborated that the scheme has been endowed with a budget of €80,000, with each eligible project eligible to receive up to €5,000 in financial assistance. This funding will cover various expenses related to the preservation and maintenance of traditional wooden boats, including repairs, renovations, and necessary upkeep.
