Melbourne Scholars for 2024 Announced

Five outstanding students from the University of Melbourne have been selected as prestigious New Colombo Plan Scholars for the year 2024, solidifying their places among a distinguished cohort of scholars from across Australia. The New Colombo Plan Scholarships, an initiative spearheaded by the Australian Government, provide crucial support for students to pursue studies lasting up to one year, coupled with opportunities to engage in internships or mentorships within the Indo-Pacific region.

At an awards ceremony held on December 5th and hosted by the Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade at Parliament House, the scholars were officially announced, marking the commencement of their transformative journeys. This initiative aims to encourage Australian undergraduate students to actively participate in and enhance their understanding of the geopolitical and cultural dynamics of our regional neighbors.

The University of Melbourne proudly introduces its New Colombo Scholars for 2024:

  • Alice Guant: Alice, a dedicated Bachelor of Arts student, will embark on an enriching academic journey at the National Taiwanese University in Taiwan. Her focus lies in Taiwan’s distinguished scholarship in Asian Queer Studies. Post her exchange semester, Alice plans to contribute further to her field by interning with the Center for the Study of Sexualities at the National Central University Taoyuan.
  • Lorraine Luo: A student pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce and Diploma in Languages, Lorraine’s destination is Fudan University in China. Her academic quest revolves around gaining a deeper understanding of Australia-China relations and examining the impact of our economic ties on the broader Chinese community. Following her exchange semester, Lorraine will bring her insights to practical applications through internships with Austrade in Shanghai and Deloitte China.
  • Lauren McKenzie: A dual-degree seeker in Bachelor of Arts and Diploma in Languages, Lauren will immerse herself in the vibrant academic atmosphere of the University of New Caledonia in New Caledonia. Her exchange semester will be dedicated to the study of Kanak languages and an exploration of shared post-colonial themes, contributing to her holistic understanding of the region.
  • Lola Schuele: A passionate Bachelor of Music student, Lola is set to explore the cultural and musical landscape at Doshisha University in Japan. Beyond her academic pursuits, she will showcase her musical talents as a bassoonist with the Doshisha University Orchestra during her exchange semester. Lola will further enhance her skills through internships with the renowned Kyotophonie music festival, the Kyoto Symphony Orchestra, and the Kyoto City Music Art and Cultural Promoting Foundation.
  • Jessica Yang: Jessica, a dedicated Bachelor of Commerce student, will undertake her academic endeavors at the University of South Pacific in Vanuatu. Her focus lies in empowering women through financial literacy in Vanuatu during her exchange semester. Post-studies, Jessica will actively contribute to her chosen cause through internships with CARE and CUFA. Additionally, Jessica has been honored as an NCP Fellow for Vanuatu, acknowledging her commitment to making a positive impact.

Commending the achievements of these scholars, University of Melbourne Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Global, Culture and Engagement) Professor Michael Wesley extended heartfelt congratulations.
