Hotels (Commonwealth Union) _ Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana, overseeing Transport, Highways, and Mass Media, voiced his support for the President’s decision to initiate a project at the Nuwara Eliya Post Office site. In a press conference, he elucidated that the relocation of the Post Office to a different location and the subsequent repurposing of the area for a viable project could create new income sources, generate job opportunities, and contribute to tourism growth in the region. This strategic approach aligns with the broader goal of optimizing resources, fostering economic development, and enhancing the overall appeal and functionality of the designated area.

Addressing a journalist’s question, the Minister emphasized the government’s stance on not selling land outright to foreigners, following the sale of land near Galle Face for the Shangri-La Hotel. Instead, the government favors leasing land for viable projects. Gunawardhana, in his capacity as the responsible Minister, has expressed readiness to present proposals for projects such as a Station Plaza near railway stations. However, he emphasized that these proposals are subject to cabinet approval and transparent processes. This commitment underscores the importance of adherence to established procedures and transparency in the approval and implementation of projects, especially those aimed at enhancing infrastructure and public spaces around railway stations.

Highlighting the dilapidated condition of the Nuwara Eliya post office, the Minister submitted a proposal to the President, suggesting the utilization of the space for an economically beneficial project. He underscored the importance of attracting investment to rejuvenate the country’s economy and emphasized the need to use available land for income generation. Considering Nuwara Eliya’s status as a popular tourist destination, particularly for Indian tourists, the construction of a hotel could enhance the region’s economic landscape, create jobs, and elevate the income levels of the local population. As the Minister overseeing the subject, he endorsed the relocation of the Post Office and the subsequent project development.
