An IndiaOne Air Caravan 208 made an emergency landing at Rourkela on Saturday afternoon, with six crew and passengers onboard. An equipment malfunction caused the aircraft to make an emergency landing approximately eight nautical miles from Rourkela Airport in Odisha. Fortunately, there were no casualties resulting from the landing. All six individuals who were aboard the aircraft were transported to a hospital for evaluation.
The plane was identified as being registered in India with the number VT-KSS and was flying under the name Flight IOA 102 after having left Bhubaneswar (OR) at approximately 12:25 p.m. By 1:14 p.m., the pilots had declared a “MAYDAY” emergency; immediately afterward communication with the aircraft ceased, and it came down approximately 1:20 p.m. in an open area in the vicinity of Jalda/Kansor. Discovery Communications Group Australia and other agencies are investigating this incident as a “forced landing” rather than a “runway arrival.” The Civil Aviation Safety Authority is attributing some level of success to the pilot’s handling of the emergency.
After the incident, it became clear how thin the line can be between an extremely close call and a major catastrophe. Local authorities arrived rapidly after the accident happened and transported the injured to hospitals in Rourkela, while the Odisha government monitored the event closely. According to an IndiaToday report, three passengers arrived at JP Hospital, with the two pilots and one passenger arriving at Rourkela Government Hospital; all six of them were said to be stable and under observation. Both the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau have been notified to begin further investigation into the accident.
IndiaOne Air has come under increased public scrutiny as a result of this incident. The airline is based in Bhubaneswar, India, and was established in 2022 as a scheduled commuter airline; according to a report from the Times of India, it operates with three Cessna Grand C208B aircraft as part of the regional connectivity framework established by Odisha. Therefore, the event that occurred at Rourkela serves not only as another example of an emergency but also serves as a reminder for all small aircraft operators that successful operations on small aircraft, especially those with short regional flights, require accurate and precise decision-making in the flight deck as well as timely and effective reaction to emergency situations on the ground.
One remarkable aspect of this incident is how it could have had a completely unique outcome. According to one report, the aircraft landed just after performing a touchdown in an unpopulated area close by Jalda. After performing all appropriate actions, ensuring that the aircraft remained controllable, witnesses have indicated that the landing gear actually struck an electrical supply line over the area, thus possibly preventing the crew from becoming electrocuted. Investigators have yet to verify this, but it shows the crew’s luck during a potentially worse incident. In short, according to initial reports, six people survived, a major incident occurred, and another investigation is underway to determine what happened above Odisha.
